Neighborhood Activities
Huntington Club is less than a mile from Alexandria, but the community is actually in Fairfax County. Fairfax County is considered by many to be one of the wealthiest and most dynamic counties in America.
Fitness Center
The Huntington Club has everything you need to keep in shape! You'll find treadmills, free wieghts, wieght machings and more. In addition the nearby Mount Vernon Recreation Center has a fully equipped facility. Gold's, Curves and other commercial work-out facilities are very close by.
Hiking, Biking
The Huntington Club is located about 1 mile from the Potomac River and the George Washington Parkway. There you'll find bike trails and paths. These bike trails, jogging paths and hiking trails are part of a network of trails which lead to Mount Vernon (6 miles south) to the south and National Airport (5 miles north). Some residents use these trails to bike into Washington, DC.
Golf, Tennis, Racquetball
The Huntington Club residents have many options. The community owns two very nice tennis courts. The Mount Vernon Rec Center has courts as well. The Belle Haven Country Club golf course and courts are close by.
Monuments
The Washington Monument and the National Mall is about 3 miles from the Huntington Club. Together with the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument is perhaps the most recognized area structure. But right near the Huntington Club, we have our own memorial that is nearly as impressive, though not as famous, as those already mentioned.
Many think the George Washington Masonic Memorial is one of the most important memorials we have in the United States of America. Locals call the monument the Masonic Temple or more rarely the Alexandria Lighthouse. The building is located near the King St. Metro.
George Washington was more then just the first president of the United States, he was a man who promoted righteous virtues , a willing nature to fight for his beliefs. As one of our founding fathers, George Washington built this country with his vision of what America should strive to be.
The George Washington Masonic Memorial is a tribute to George Washington the man and the mason. Thus, the building reflects the democratic principles of George Washington by referencing the architectural style of ancient Rome and Greece. The edifice appears as a lighthouse, mimicking the architecture of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria. And high atop Shooter's Hill it dominates the Alexandria Skyline. But inside the building are many interesting rooms and site.
There are nine different floors in the edifice, each offering something different to the public. The first floor is the Grand Masonic Hall which can be used for lectures and meetings. The entire tower is supported by 8 granite Doric columns.
Also located on the first floor is the Shrine Exhibit. The Shriners of North America is an international fraternity which supports the Shriners Hospital for Children. The Shriners core beliefs are brotherly love, truth, relief, and fun. With over 375,000 members world wide, the Shriners have made a tremendous positive impact in children's lives for many years. The Shrine exhibit dates back to 1876 and depicts Presidents of the Shrine fraternity, 191 Shrine Temples, and one wall in the room symbolizes the pilgrimage to Mecca and the Shriners striving for perfection.
The "Shriners Hospital for Children" Room commemorates the work of Shriners every where in support of the Shriner Hospital for Children. In this room, there is a large white statue of a Shriner holding a little girl in the left arm and holding her crutches in the right hand. This room also houses an animated model of the Shriner parade.
The Independent Square Room, also on the first floor, contains a replica of Independence Square which is located at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital.
The building's first floor is home to the George Washington Memorial Theater. This grand theater provides a wonderful setting for cultural events and still includes and original painting of George Washington painted by Hattie Elizabeth Burdette over looking the center of the stage.
Among other things, the second floor is home to the Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 and home of Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 120. (I've actually visited both of these lodges as I am a member of the nearby Pride of Fairfax No. 298.) The Replica Lodge Room is a replica in every detail from 1802, paintings, furniture, and so on. There is also Washington's bedchamber clock which is set at the time 10:20pm, Dec. 14th, 1799, the precise time of his death.
On the second floor, the Memorial Hall features a large bronze statue of Washington, a mural on the north wall shows George Washington and his troops at Christ Church in Philadelphia. On the south wall is another mural dating to September 18th 1793, laying the cornerstone of the United States Capitol.
The third floor has the Grotto Exhibit---a social organization of Master Masons. The initials M.O.V.P.E.R. (The Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm) are displayed over a single chair.
The fourth floor has the George Washington Museum which displays, paintings, relics, prints, and historical documents. Another impressive statue of Washington towers in the museum.

The fifth floor takes us to the Royal Arch Exhibit which includes a painting by Allyn Cox of ruins of Kings Solomon's Temple. Also, a reproduction of the Ark of the Covenant.
The higher the floor, the smaller the floor, so the higher floors contain less attractions. This is very noticeable on the highest floors. On the sixth floor is the Memorial Library, available only by appointment. It contains over 20,000 volumes Masonic works.
The seventh floor which contains several murals depicting Masonic lessons based on the Old Testament. (A detail from one of these murals is shown here.) The eigth floor is home to the Knights Templar Chapel which allows people to reflect and pray.
The ninth floor has the Tall Cedars Exhibit. This includes a model of King Solomon's throne and temple. This level overlooks the city of Old Town Alexandria in a spectacular fashion. The observation deck provides a 360 degree view of Alexandria.

The George Washington Masonic Memorial provides the public with a rich history of George Washington, and gives a window to view his life through. Anyone who ever plans to visit Alexandria must see this interesting memorial.
The Carlyle District and homes in Old Town enjoy spectacular views of the Memorial as do some of the residences at Jefferson Manor, the Midtowns, Hunting Creek Club, the Huntington Club and Montebello.
Restaurants
There's no end of choices in the surrounding area. In the immediate area is a Taco stand, an El Salvadoran restaurant, an Eastern European take-out, a Chinese take-out and more.
In Old Towne, a fickle gourmand can always find something to suit his budget and tastes: Le Gaulois, La Madeliene, King St. Blues, South Austin Grill, Murphy's Pub, Las Tapas and many more. On Jefferson Davis Highway ("restaurant row"), a wide variety of chain restaurants and local talent offer a more suburban feel: Applebee's, T.G.I Friday's, Chili's, Chevy's, Old Country Buffet, Chipotle and every fast food chain.
Shopping
Upscale or downscale or anywhere in between, it's all close by. The Huntington Club is strategically located close to warehouse stores like Target, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Walmart, Petsmart, Staples and more. But the Huntington Club is also close to the boutiques, respected and high-end chains of Old Towne: Joseph A. Bank, the Gap, Banana Republic, Bombay Company, Restoration Hardware, Anne Taylor, Talbot, Chico's, and many more.
Sports
The Washington Wizards, Washington Capitols, Washington Nationals, DC United and our beloved Washington Redskins delight local sports fans.

Charm and Chocolate -- Fairfax City FestivalWhen Forbes Magazine named Fairfax City #3 of the top 25 U.S. cities to live in, it must have had the Chocolate Festival in mind. Every year at this time the town invites the rest of us to binge on chocolate and charming 19th century surroundings. This year's festival will be held on February 6 and 7 in Old Town Fairfax at Main Street and University Drive. Events will include a contest to create chocolate works of art, a Pancake breakfast (chocolate chip, of course), open house in some the district's historic buildings and a craft show. Walk off some of those excess calories by exploring well preserved buildings dating from the early 1800's, including the site of the first Confederate casualty of the Civil War and the Fairfax City Courthouse--built in 1800 and still in use today. The district also includes a wide variety of restaurants and boutiques. Alexandria Fun with Friends Group starts the New Year healthy! The Alexandria Fun with Friends group is getting together for some light gaming fun at the Club Room again. Friends and newcomers alike are welcome. Attendees are invited to please bring your favorite games and be ready to teach or just bring an open mind and be ready to learn.
The group will mainly be playing what they call "Eurogames". Although these games
come from all over now, the first of this genre started in Europe, thus the name.
Typically Eurogames are easy to learn, fast to play and the game is about collecting
points of some kind rather than eliminating your opponent. This is different from
classic American games like Risk or Monopoly where the game can last for hours and
the goal of the game is to conquer or crush your opponent. Of course, card games,
Scrabble and other old favorites are always welcome.
Our food theme this time around: healthy snacks! There is no charge for the event, but attendees are asked to bring fruit or a veggie tray or something creative (but healthy). Please bring a drink to share. This is as much about the socializing as it is about the gaming. The organize says, "If you've never been to one of our gaming get-togethers the mood is casual and relaxed. We welcome new folks and we're happy to see old friends. We hope to see you there!" BTW, the Greater Washington DC RPG group is meeting at the same venue at 2 pm and will be wrapping up just as the Alexandria Fun with Friends group starts up. Some of them might linger through our meet-up. Those of you who wish to may come early for their meetup.

Holiday Adventures around Northern VA
I was born in Northern Virginia, and have lived here most of my life, but there are no end of things to do. When Christmas approaches in Northern Virginia, the Holiday Season is a great time to get out and see some of what the area has to offer. Julie and I have already started to enjoy some of the many sites of the season and I thought I'd share a bit with friends and soon to be friends who are considering moving to this area.
Just across the Potomac River from Alexandria VA is the National Convention Center at National Harbor. This recently developed area is home to many high-end shops and restaurants, and makes a nice day-trip anytime. Julie and I visited ICE! a holiday display of ice sculptures. The attraction was billed as "a world unlike any other ... a winter wonderland made entirely of ice. We explored ten different holiday scenes made from two million pounds of ice, including a life-sized Santa's Workshop, a penguin village... and even ice slides that stood more than two stories tall! ICE! was created by a team of 40 artisans and sculptors.
The tunnel had white branches that were covered in ice. Inside the exhibit the air was a chilly 9 degrees Fahrenheit. All visitors wore special blue parkas over their coats that kept us nice and warm.
My son Stuart and I goofed around at the penguins near the glass-like ice igloo. National Harbor can be seen from Alexandria, but a few nights ago we took a short drive around the Beltway to the Washington, DC Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints, also known as the Mormon Temple.
The ground of the Mormon Temple are open to all visitors during the Christmas season. This impressive church and its surrounding grounds shine brightly with nearly a half-million sparkling Christmas lights. Each night, a different local musical group performs a live concert in a state-of-the-art theater. Best of all: all events are free!
It's hard for my little picture to really catch the brilliance of the winter night, but in both of these pictures you can see a representative of the Star of David shining in the distance over a Nativity Sceen near the visitors' center.
We grabbed some photos outside and walked the grounds. They were plenty of people there, but the crowds were very polite and nice. The Mormon ushers and parking attendants were very welcoming to all who approached.
It was a chilly night, so we came in the visitor's center to warm up. There were Christmas Trees from around the area and I took Julie's picture near the Mount Vernon tree. I really liked the trees with contributions from nations around the world. Those trees were themed by continents so there was a tree themed with decorations from Africa, from South American, from Europe and from Asia.
Another great spot to check out is the National Christmas Tree near the lawn of the Whitehouse near the Ellipse in Washington DC.
We parked in front of the Washington Monument and then headed across the lawn toward the National Christmas Tree and National Menorah. On the way we passed an enormous Yule Log burning brightly to warm visitors. There is a parade of free entertainment and there are trees representing all the states and territories of the USA.
The National Christmas Tree is between the Washington Monument and the Whitehouse, but very close to the Whitehouse.
